Holiday Villa on Formentera

Casa Ana Formentera Villa - Local information.

I am pleased to provide the following information about places of interest close to Casa Ana to help you find your way around and hopefully add to your holiday pleasure.

BEACHES

Formentera is famous for its white sand beaches and crystal clear water. Here is a guide to some of the best ones.

Formentera is virtually surrounded by beaches but the most popular ones are on the Trocador peninsula or Platja Mitjon. The latter is virtually one long beach covering most of the southern coastline of the island. There are numorous beach bars and restaurants well spaced out along the beach.

The Trocador peninsula is part of a National Conservation Zone where no more buildings of any sort are allowed to be built. It has almost continuous beaches on both sides of the peninsula.

ILLETES BEACH
This is Formentera's most popular beach and therefore at peak times may be the most crowded.
As you look at the peninsula on a map, Illetes is on the left hand side and like most of the beaches on this side of the peninsula has beach bars hiring sun loungers & beach umbrellas. There are also water sports equipment for hire such as wind-surfers and small catamarans.

LEVANTE BEACH
On the other side of the peninsula is Levante (llevant) beach which stretches virtually from Es Pujols right to the tip of the island. There are only two beach bars along this coastline - Kiosco Levante and the Tanga Bar and it is only close to these that you will find sun-loungers and beach umbrellas for hire.

Before you reach Levante beach there is another small beach that is superb for snorkelling and feeding the fish. It lies in between Es Pujols and Levante and is called Ses Canyes. While not a designated naturist beach, like most beaches on Formentera, costumes are considered optional and you may encounter nudism here.

PLAYA MITJORN
On the south side of the island is Playa Mitjorn. This is in fact a series of beaches separated by small rocky headlands and stretches for several kilometres. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants reached by unmade roads leading off the main road towards La Mola. It is most developed at its Eastern end whereas the other end of the beach near Ca Mari is almost completely untouched. Sa Platjeta restaurant is set just above the beach in this area and is a superb place for an outdoor meal. You can pop back in for a swim to cool down between courses it is that close to the water.

Beach Etiquette and Clothing

On Formentera, swimming costumes are considered optional except for anywhere in close proximity to a beach bar or restaurant. If nudity offends you it is best to keep to these areas. However, most people quickly find that it is so natural here, not at all offensive & with absolutely no pressure to either wear or not to wear a costume, that their attitude to nudity softens and they visit the beaches that they find the most appealing irrespective of whether most people have clothes on or not.

RESTAURANTS

There are countless restaurants on Formentera catering for almost every style imaginable, local, Chinese, Argentine, Italian and even Sushi. Most of them are of good quality and I have seldom had a poor meal, but of course owners and chefs change, so what may be a favourite one year may not be so good the next. Here are a few which have been good for some time.

Close to Casa Ana in San Fernando there is Can Forn, a small intimate restaurant providing excellent local cuisine at reasonable prices - See the gallery for photos.

Nearby is Fonda Pepe, for a long time the "hippy centre" of San Fernando and still very much an "in place". It can get very busy in high season so it pays to get there early.

In Es Pujols there are many many restaurants of all types and prices. Sa Palmera; S'Averadera; La Barca; Capri; Ma Vie, are all very reliable.

Sa Platgeta near to Ca Mari on Playa Mitjorn is excellent for beach side meals including local dishes and fresh fish.
For fabulous sunsets go to Hostal La Sabina close to the port, Sa Sequi a short walk away or for a young, noisy, mostly Italian atmosphere at sundown visit nearby Big Sur.
